The development of the glandular stomach was studied using light, electron, and fluorescent microscopy. The research used 130 Japanese quail eggs from the second to the seventeenth days of incubation.The proventriculus could be distinguished on the3rd day. Its wall consisted of four tunics: tunica mucosa, very thin tunica submucosa, tunica muscularis, and outermost tunica serosa. Mucosal folds appeared on the 8th day. The luminal epithelium was pseudostratified columnar in type and transformed into simple columnar by the 10th day. The mucosal papillae emerged on the 11th day, spiraled on the 15th day, and had a distinct whorled look by the 17th day. Two types of proventricular glands were recognized: compound tubuloalveolar and simple tubular glands. Both types were situated within the tunica mucosa. On the 4th day, the compound glands emerged as evaginations of the lining epithelium. It began to branch on the 8th day and became well established by the 11th day. The simple glands appeared on the 11th day as localized down-growths of the luminal epithelium forming solid cords. On the 15th day, many of them showed complete canalization. On the 8th day, the muscular coat was differentiated into the lamina muscularis mucosae and tunica muscularis.

Morphological traits have often been used to predict diet and trophic position of species across many animal groups. Variation in gut size of closely related animals is known to be a good predictor of dietary habits. Species that are more herbivorous or that persist on low-quality diets often have larger stomachs than their carnivorous counterparts. This same pattern exists in crabs and in most species, individuals exhibit external markings on the dorsal side of their carapace that appear to align with the position and size of their gut. We hypothesized that these external markings could be used as an accurate estimate of the crab's cardiac stomach size, allowing an approximation of crab dietary strategies without the need to sacrifice and dissect individual animals. We used literature values for mean diet and standardized external gut size markings taken from crab photographs across 50 species to show that percent herbivory in the diet increases non-linearly across species of brachyuran crab with the external estimate of gut size. We also used data from dissections in four species to show that external gut markings were positively correlated with gut sizes, though the strength of this correlation differed across species. We conclude that when rough approximations of diet quality such as percent herbivory will suffice, measuring external carapace markings in crabs presents a quick, free, non-lethal alternative to dissections. Our results also provide important insights into tradeoffs that occur in crab morphology and have implications for crab evolution.

Morphophysiological species researches are fundamental, and diagnostic imaging is an excellent technique, already used in wild animals, with great application, not invasive and provide real-time information of each body. Amazonian manatees are on the list of endangered animals classified in the vulnerable category and knowledge of the normal pattern of ultrasound anatomy of organs and tissues is important for the maintenance and well-being of captive specimens contributing to reintroduction actions. The objective of the study was to standardize the examination technique and describe the ultrasound findings of the liver, gallbladder, stomach, urinary bladder and the subcutaneous tissue of the abdominal region in Trichechus inunguis, in order to contribute with the anatomical and sonographic knowledge and assist in the diagnosis and prognosis diseases. The study used 18 animals to describe the normal sonographic anatomy in the abdominal cavity of the Amazonian manatee. During abdominal scan, it was possible to visualize the features of the liver, gallbladder, stomach, urinary bladder obtained satisfactory results in this study. Therefore, other structures were not primarily identified by the reduced time, lots of fat and gases in intestines of animals.


Pesquisas morfofisiológicas em espécies selvagens são fundamentais, e o diagnóstico por imagem é uma excelente técnica, já usada e com grande aplicação, não invasiva e que fornece informações em tempo real de cada órgão. Peixes-boi-amazônico encontram-se na lista de animais ameaçados de extinção classificados na categoria vulnerável e o conhecimento do padrão normal da anatomia ultrassonográfica de órgãos e tecidos é importante para a manutenção e bem-estar de espécimes em cativeiro contribuindo para ações de reintrodução. O objetivo deste estudo foi padronizar a técnica de exame e descrever os achados ultrassonográficos do fígado, vesícula biliar, estômago, vesícula urinária e o tecido subcutâneo da região abdominal em Trichechus inunguis, de modo a contribuir com o conhecimento anátomo-sonográfico e auxiliar no diagnóstico e prognóstico de doenças. O estudo utilizou 18 animais para descrever a anatomia ultrassonográfica normal na cavidade abdominal de peixe-boi amazônico. Durante a varredura abdominal foi possível visualizar as características dos órgãos obtendo resultados satisfatórios neste estudo, concluindo ser uma técnica eficiente para avaliação de determinados órgãos abdominais em peixe-boi amazônico. Entretanto, outras estruturas não foram identificadas principalmente pelo tempo reduzido, muita gordura e gases nos intestinos dos animais.

SUMMARY: The book "Mirâtü'l-Ebdân fi Tesrîh-i Âzâü'l-Insân" written by Sânîzâde Mehmet Ataullah Efendi was the first illustrated anatomy book published in the Ottoman Empire. The aim of this study was to determine the similarities and differences between the terms and definitions of stomach anatomy used by Sânîzâde at that time and those used today. The stomach section of the "Mirâtü'l-Ebdân fi Tesrîh-i Âzâü'l-Insân" was examined and related plates were translated into the Turkish language. Anatomical terms and definitions of stomach anatomy in this book were compared to the stomach terminology used in "Terminologia Anatomica" which is the reference book for terminology today. The stomach section was explained under the title "El-Babu-Sâlis fi Tesrihi'l-Mi'de" (Illustrated Stomach Anatomy) in this book. Parts, margins, arteries, veins, nerves and layers of the stomach were explained with the terms and definitions of that period. Terminologia Anatomica has 33 anatomical terms related to the stomach, while 15 terms were identified in the book "Mirâtü'l-Ebdân fi Tesrîh-i Âzâü'l-Insân". Although more terms related to the stomach anatomy are used today, the fundamental information on stomach anatomy in Sânîzâde's book was compatible with much of the information used in modern anatomy books today.


El libro "Mirâtü'l-Ebdân fi Tesrîh-i Âzâü'l- Insân" escrito por Sânîzâde Mehmet Ataullah Efendi fue el primer libro de anatomía ilustrado y publicado en el Imperio Otomano. El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar las similitudes y diferen- cias entre los términos y definiciones de la anatomía del estómago utilizados por Sânîzâde en ese momento y los que se utilizan en la actualidad. Se examinó la sección del estómago del "Mirâtü'l-Ebdân fi Tesrîh-i Âzâü'l-Insân" y las placas relacionadas se tradujeron al idioma turco. Los términos anatómicos y las definiciones de la anatomía del estómago en este libro se compararon con la terminología del estómago utilizada en Terminologia Anatomica, el libro de referencia para la terminología utilizado actualmente. La sección del estómago se explicó bajo el título "El-Babu-Sâlis fi Tesrihi'l-Mi'de" (Anatomía del estómago ilustrada) en este libro. Fueron definidas las partes, márgenes, arterias, venas, nervios y capas del estómago con los términos y definiciones de esa época. Terminologia Anatomica tiene 33 términos anatómicos relacionados con el estómago, mientras que 15 términos fueron identificados en el libro "Mirâtü'l-Ebdân fi Tesrîh-i Âzâü'l-Insân". Aunque hoy en día se utilizan más términos relacionados con la anatomía del estómago, la información fundamental sobre la anatomía del estómago en el libro de Sânîzâde era compatible con gran parte de la información utilizada en los libros de anatomía modernos en la actualidad.

Muroid rodents mostly have a complex stomach: one part is lined with a cornified (nonglandular) epithelium, referred to as a "forestomach", whereas the rest is lined with glandular epithelium. Numerous functions for the forestomach have been proposed. We collated a catalog of anatomical depictions of the stomach of 174 muroid species from which the respective nonglandular and glandular areas could be digitally measured, yielding a "stomach ratio" (nonglandular:glandular area) as a scale-independent variable. Stomach ratios ranged from 0.13 to 20.15, and the coefficient of intraspecific variation if more than one picture was available for a species averaged at 29.7% (±21.5). We tested relationships of the ratio with body mass and various anatomical and ecological variables, including diet. There was a consistent phylogenetic signal, suggesting that closely related species share a similar anatomy. Apart from classifying stomachs into hemiglandular and discoglandular, no anatomical or ecological measure showed a consistent relationship to the stomach ratio. In particular, irrespective of statistical method or the source of dietary information, dietary proxies did not significantly correlate with the stomach ratio, except for a trend towards significance for invertivory (insectivory). Yet, even this relationship was not convincing: whereas highly insectivorous species had high but no low stomach ratios, herbivorous species had both low and high stomach ratios. Thus, the statistical effect is not due to a systematic increase in the relative forestomach size with invertivory. The most plausible hypotheses so far associate the muroid forestomach and its microbiome with a generic protective role against microbial or fungal toxins and diseases, without evident correlates of a peculiar need for this function under specific ecological conditions. Yet, this function remains to be confirmed. While providing a catalog of published depictions and hypotheses, this study highlights that the function of the muroid rodent forestomach remains enigmatic to date.

This study was performed to investigate the gross anatomy, histochemistry, and immunohistochemistry of the stomach in the Caucasian squirrel. A total of five male squirrels were included. The obtained results showed that the shape of the stomach was acutely crescent and consisted of four regions namely; cardiac, fundus, body, and pylorus. The stomach glandular and its wall was consisted of four layers; serosa, muscularis, submucosa, and mucosa. All part of the mucosa was covered by a simple columnar epithelium. Furthermore, gastric glands were of the simple tubular type. The mucous cells of the fundic and body regions were PAS-positive. In the lower third of the gastric glands, parietal, and chief cells were identified. The number of chief cells was increased toward the pyloric area. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the fundus region contained many plicae and grooves and each plica carried numerous glands opening. In the body region, cells were polygonal and formed network-like structures. In the pyloric region, a mucosal ridge between the body and antrum and a thick mucosal crest on the lesser curvature were identified. Immunohistochemical staining showed that Sox9 was strongly expressed in the fundic region, however, its expression in the body and pylorus was moderate to weak. In conclusion, there are some similarities and differences between the stomach of the Caucasian squirrel and other mammals including rodents. The obtained results may enhance our basic knowledge regarding the feeding habits and digestive system histophysiology of this species.

SUMMARY: This study investigated the use of fused deposition modeling (FDM), three-dimensional (3D) printed models, of the ovine stomach to learn surface and topographical anatomy. The objectives were: i) to faithfully reproduce the external morphology, the normal volume and the correct positioning of the four compartments of the stomach ii) to facilitate students the spatial visualization of the organ with emphasis on the complex relationship stomach-greater omentum. The model was built based on surface scanning. To obtain the images the ovine stomach was scanned using a 3D surface scanner. Assessment of the model was performed through surveys to first-year veterinary students after the practical sessions in which, they studied and compared both real and 3D-printed specimens. Regarding morphology no significant differences were reported, students were equally able to identify the different structures and compartments on the 3D-printed model. Understanding of both spatial position and relationship of the stomach with neighboring anatomical structures was easier achieved with the 3D-printed model. Other advantages of the 3D-printed model were handle-resistance and ease of handling, availability and reduction of animal specimens. We propose that 3D-printed ovine stomach by surface scanning is a valuable simple model to support learning of surface and topographical anatomy.


RESUMEN: Este estudio investigó el uso de modelos de modelos tridimensionales (3D), impresos mediante deposición fundida (FDM) del estómago ovino para aprender su anatomía superficial y topográfica. Los objetivos fueron: i) reproducir la morfología externa, el volumen normal y el correcto posicionamiento de los cuatro compartimentos del estómago ii) facilitar al alumno la visualización espacial del órgano con énfasis en la compleja relación estómago- omento mayor. El modelo se construyó basándose en un escaneo de superficie. Para obtener las imágenes, se escaneó el estómago ovino utilizando un escáner de superficie 3D. La evaluación del modelo se realizó mediante encuestas a estudiantes de primer año de veterinaria después de las sesiones prácticas en las que estudiaron y compararon especímenes tanto reales como impresos en 3D. En cuanto a la morfología, no se observaron diferencias significativas, los estudiantes fueron igualmente capaces de identificar las diferentes estructuras y compartimentos en el modelo impreso en 3D. La comprensión de la posición espacial y la relación del estómago con las estructuras anatómicas vecinas se logró más fácilmente con el modelo impreso en 3D. Otras ventajas del modelo impreso en 3D fueron la resistencia y facilidad de manejo, la disponibilidad y la reducción del uso de muestras de animales. Proponemos que el estómago ovino impreso en 3D mediante escaneo de superficie es un modelo simple y valioso para apoyar el aprendizaje de la anatomía superficial y topográfica.

ABSTRACT: The study's aim was to determine if there was an association between gastric morphology and gastroesophageal reflux (GER). Few published studies have investigated the relationship between gastric morphology and the risk of GER.A total of 777 patients were randomly selected from 3000 to 3300 patients who presented at a medical center in Taipei for annual health checkups from early 2008 through to late 2010 and underwent a series of radiographs of the upper gastrointestinal tract (UGI). GER was recorded during the real-time fluoroscopic study. Thirty-nine participants had a follow-up endoscopy, and another 164 participants were followed up by a second UGI series 12 +/ -1.5 months later, from late 2008 through to early 2022. All participants completed a lifestyle and symptom questionnaire. The variables included current smoking and alcohol consumption. Participants who had heartburn and dysphagia were included in the study. Additionally, all participants underwent a limited physical examination which recorded age, sex, body mass index, and total cholesterol and triglyceride levels.All participants were classified into types 1 to 6 based on the gastric morphology determined from the first UGI. Cascade stomach is recognized by characteristic findings on UGI. Gastric types 2 and 3 tend to appear as cascade stomachs and were significantly associated with GER (P < .05) compared with the other groups. Morphologic type 5 appeared as an elongated sac extending downward into the pelvic cavity and was less likely to develop GER (P < .001). The results of follow-up studies by UGI and endoscopy were similar to those of the first UGI. Gastric morphologic type 2 was significantly associated, and type 5 was usually not associated, with GER and erosive esophagitis (P < .05) compared with the other groups, by both UGI and endoscopy.Gastric morphologic types 2 and 3, with cascade stomach, might provide a relatively easy method for the development of the GER phenomenon. Gastric morphologic type 5 appeared as an elongated sac that might reduce the incidence of the GER phenomenon. The study suggested that gastric morphologic type could influence the occurrence of GER.

BACKGROUND: The use of magnetically controlled capsules for gastroscopy is in the early stages of clinical adoption. We aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a fully automated magnetically controlled capsule endoscopy (FAMCE) system in clinical practice for gastroscopy and small bowel examination. METHODS: We did a prospective, comparative study to evaluate the safety and efficacy of FAMCE. Patients from two hospitals in Chongqing, China were consecutively enrolled. Eligible participants were aged 18-80 years with suspected gastric pathology and no previous surgery. Participants underwent FAMCE for screening of gastric lesions, then conventional transoral gastroscopy 2 h later, and stomach examination results were compared. The primary outcome was the rate of complete detection of gastric anatomy landmarks (cardia, fundus, body, angulus, antrum, and pylorus) by FAMCE. Secondary outcomes were the time required for gastric completion by FAMCE, the rate of detection of gastric lesions by FAMCE compared with conventional transoral gastroscopy, and the rate of complete small bowel examination. Adverse events were also evaluated. The study was registered in the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry, ChiCTR2000040507. FINDINGS: Between May 12 and Aug 17, 2020, 114 patients (mean age 44·0 years [IQR 34·0-55·0]; 63 [55%] female) were enrolled. The rate of complete detection of gastric anatomical structures by FAMCE was 100% (95% CI 99·3-100·0). The concordance between FAMCE and conventional transoral gastroscopy was 99·61% (99·45-99·78). The mean completion time of a gastroscopy with FAMCE was 19·17 min (SD 1·43; median 19·00, IQR 19·00-20·00), compared with 5·21 min (2·00; 5·18, 3·68-6·45) for conventional transoral gastroscopy. In 114 enrolled patients, 214 lesions were detected by FAMCE and conventional transoral gastroscopy. Of those, 193 were detected by both modalities. FAMCE missed five pathologies (four cases of gastritis and one polyp), whereas conventional transoral gastroscopy missed 16 pathologies (12 cases of gastritis, one polyp, one fundal xanthoma, and two antral erosions). FAMCE was able to provide a complete small bowel examination for all 114 patients and detected intestinal lesions in 50 (44%) patients. During the study, two (2%) patients experienced adverse events. No serious adverse events were recorded, and there was no evidence of capsule retention. INTERPRETATION: The performance of FAMCE is similar to conventional transoral gastroscopy in completion of gastric examination and lesion detection. Furthermore, it can provide a complete small bowel examination. Therefore, FAMCE could be effective method for examination of the gastrointestinal tract. Uniaxial tensile experiments are a standard method to determine the contractile properties of smooth muscles. Smooth muscle strips from organs of the urogenital and gastrointestinal tract contain multiple muscle layers with different muscle fiber orientations, which are frequently not separated for the experiments. During strip activation, these muscle fibers contract in deviant orientations from the force-measuring axis, affecting the biomechanical characteristics of the tissue strips. This study aimed to investigate the influence of muscle layer separation on the determination of smooth muscle properties. Smooth muscle strips, consisting of longitudinal and circumferential muscle layers (whole-muscle strips [WMS]), and smooth muscle strips, consisting of only the circumferential muscle layer (separated layer strips [SLS]), have been prepared from the fundus of the porcine stomach. Strips were mounted with muscle fibers of the circumferential layer inline with the force-measuring axis of the uniaxial testing setup. The force-length (FLR) and force-velocity relationships (FVR) were determined through a series of isometric and isotonic contractions, respectively. Muscle layer separation revealed no changes in the FLR. However, the SLS exhibited a higher maximal shortening velocity and a lower curvature factor than WMS. During WMS activation, the transversally oriented muscle fibers of the longitudinal layer shortened, resulting in a narrowing of this layer. Expecting volume constancy of muscle tissue, this narrowing leads to a lengthening of the longitudinal layer, which counteracted the shortening of the circumferential layer during isotonic contractions. Consequently, the shortening velocities of the WMS were decreased significantly. This effect was stronger at high shortening velocities.

A comprehensive mathematical model is presented to study the peristaltic flow of Bingham viscoplastic micropolar fluid flow inside a microlength channel with electro-osmotic effects. The electro-osmotic effects are produced due to an axially applied electric field. The circulation of this electric potential is calculated by utilizing Poisson Boltzmann equation. The dimensionless form of mathematical equations is obtained by using lubrication theory and Debye-Huckel approximation. We have obtained analytical solutions for the final dimensionless governing equations. Finally, the graphical results are added to further discuss the physical aspects of the problem. Electro-osmotic is mainly helping to control the flow and axial velocity decreases with an increase in the electric field but micro-angular velocity increases with an increase in electric field.

BACKGROUND: Routine measurement of gastric residual volume to guide feeding is widespread in neonatal units but not supported by high-quality evidence. Outcome selection is critical to trial design. OBJECTIVE: To determine optimal outcome measures for a trial of not routinely measuring gastric residual volume in neonatal care. DESIGN: A focused literature review, parent interviews, modified two-round Delphi survey and stakeholder consensus meeting. PARTICIPANTS: Sixty-one neonatal healthcare professionals participated in an eDelphi survey; 17 parents were interviewed. 19 parents and neonatal healthcare professionals took part in the consensus meeting. RESULTS: Literature review generated 14 outcomes, and parent interviews contributed eight additional outcomes; these 22 outcomes were then ranked by 74 healthcare professionals in the first Delphi round where four further outcomes were proposed; 26 outcomes were ranked in the second round by 61 healthcare professionals. Five outcomes were categorised as 'consensus in', and no outcomes were voted 'consensus out'. 'No consensus' outcomes were discussed and voted on in a face-to-face meeting by 19 participants, where four were voted 'consensus in'. The final nine consensus outcomes were: mortality, necrotising enterocolitis, time to full enteral feeds, duration of parenteral nutrition, time feeds stopped per 24 hours, healthcare-associated infection; catheter-associated bloodstream infection, change in weight between birth and neonatal discharge and pneumonia due to milk aspiration. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: We have identified outcomes for a trial of no routine measurement of gastric residual volume to guide feeding in neonatal care. This outcome set will ensure outcomes are important to healthcare professionals and parents.

Cutaneous electrogastrography (EGG) is used in clinical and physiological fields to noninvasively measure the electrical activity of the stomach and intestines. Dipole models that mathematically express the electrical field characteristics generated by the stomach and intestines have been developed to investigate the relationship between the electrical control activity (ECA) (slow waves) shown in EGG and the internal gastric electrical activity. However, these models require a mathematical description of the movement of an annular band of dipoles, which limits the shape that can be modeled. In this study, we propose a novel polygonally meshed dipole model to conveniently reproduce ECA based on the movement of the annular band in complex shapes, such as the shape of the stomach and intestines, constructed in three-dimensional (3D) space. We show that the proposed model can reproduce ECA simulation results similar to those obtained using conventional models. Moreover, we show that the proposed model can reproduce the ECA produced by a complex geometrical shape, such as the shape of the intestines. The study results indicate that ECA simulations can be conducted based on structures that more closely resemble real organs than those used in conventional dipole models, with which, because of their intrinsic construction, it would be difficult to include realistic complex shapes, using the mathematical description of the movement of an annular band of dipoles. Our findings provide a powerful new approach for computer simulations based on the electric dipole model.

BACKGROUND: Many countries are increasingly prohibiting the addition of antibiotics in livestock diets. Therefore, herb extracts have gradually drawn attention to substitute antibiotics. Our present study aimed to determine the effects of herbal extract mixture (HEM) in dietary on growth performance, organ weight, intestinal morphology and intestinal nutrient transporters in weaned pigs. METHODS: 27 piglets (Duroc × [Landrace × Yorkshire]; Body Weight (BW) = 5.99 ± 0.13 kg) were weaned at day 21 and randomly divided into three groups (n = 9 piglets/group). All piglets received a basal diet containing similar amounts of nutrients for 14 days. The three groups were the control (no additive), the antibiotics (375 mg/kg chlortetracycline, 20%, 500 mg/kg enramycin, 4%, 1,500 mg/kg oxytetracycline calcium, 50%) and the HEM group (1000 mg/kg extract mixture of golden-and-silver honeysuckle, huangqi, duzhong leaves and dangshen). After 14 d of treatment, we collected tissue samples to measure organ weight, intestinal parameters, intestinal morphology, digestive enzyme activities and intestinal mRNA expression of nutrient transporters. RESULTS: The HEM group had no effects on growth performance and organ weight of weaned pigs. But compared with the control group, both HEM and antibiotics improved intestinal morphology, and HEM elevated the expression of nutrient transporters in ileum (SLC6A9, SLC15A1, and SLC5A1). HEM significantly decreased the activities of maltase in ileum and the ratio of small intestinal weight to BW than control group. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate benefit effects of the supplementation of HEM in diet, including modulating intestinal morphology and increasing the mRNA expression of nutrients transporters. These findings suggest that HEM provides novel insights into a variety of herbal extract mixtures to replace antibiotics in animal production.

Whereas gastric emptying significantly predicts calorie intake, the association between gastric capacity and satiation and satiety is unclear. To study the associations between gastric volumes and ingestive behaviors with satiation and satiety in obesity, 62 healthy adult obese patients (57 female) with no eating disorders underwent measurements of satiety, as determined by kilocalories of ingestion at a buffet meal, and satiation by volume to comfortable fullness (VTF) and maximum tolerated volume (MTV), while drinking Ensure (30 mL/min). Fasting and postprandial gastric volumes were measured by validated single-photon emission computed tomography. We also measured eating [Weight Efficacy Life-Style Questionnaire score (WEL)] and exercise behaviors associated with obesity. Spearman correlation-assessed relationships of measured traits and linear regression analysis to identify predictors of satiation or satiety. The participants were aged 38 ± 10.1 yr and the body mass index (BMI) 36.8 ± 4.8 kg/m2. Fasting gastric volume was significantly correlated with VTF (rs = 0.3, P = 0.03), but not with MTV or buffet meal kilocalorie ingestion. Regression analysis identified sex (P = 0.02, with males having significantly higher fasting gastric volume) and fasting gastric volume (0.04) as predictors of higher VTF. An increase in fasting gastric volume of 50 mL resulted in a 6-mL increase in VTF. Buffet meal intake was inversely related to the ability to resist the urge to eat; factors associated with ingestive behavior (increase in total WEL score) significantly correlated with satiety and gastric accommodation (P < 0.05). Gastric capacity during fasting is associated with calorie intake to the point of comfortable fullness; factors associated with ingestive behavior are associated with satiety and gastric accommodation.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Buffet meal intake was inversely related to the ability to resist the urge to overeat. Factors associated with ingestive behavior significantly correlated with satiety and gastric accommodation. Gastric capacity during fasting is associated with calorie intake to the point of comfortable fullness; factors associated with ingestive behavior are associated with satiety and gastric accommodation.

Different from classical surgical anatomy which only pays attention to the morphology and structure of human organs, modern membrane anatomy focuses on not only the relationship between morphology and structure, but also the biological behavior characteristics of tumors. Membrane antomy is a theoretical system with interpretation on both the structural and disease function, so it has been accepted by more and more gastrointestinal surgeons. However, the theoretical system of gastric membrane anatomy is not mature yet. The stomach and its mesentery have undergone complex rotation and fusion in the process of embryonic development, so that surgeons have different understandings of the gastric membrane anatomy. Therefore, it is easy to cause various confusion and misunderstanding, resulting in deviations between the theory of membrane anatomy and the practice of surgery. In the present study, the mesentery of the stomach is divided into different regions, and the embryonic development process is traced back. The application and compromise encountered in the radical gastrectomy of gastric cancer will be expounded according to the membrane anatomy theory combined with the author's experience of operation.

Surgical resection remains the primary choice of treatment and the only potentially curative option for gastric carcinoma, and is increasingly performed laparoscopically. Gastric resection represents a challenging procedure, with a significant morbidity and non-negligible postoperative mortality. The interpretation of imaging after gastric surgery can be challenging due to significant modifications of the normal anatomy. After the surgery, the familiarity with expected imaging appearances is crucial for diagnosis and appropriate management of potentially life-threatening complications in patients who underwent gastric surgery. We review various surgical techniques used in gastric surgery and describe fluoroscopic and cross-sectional imaging appearances of normal postoperative anatomic changes as well as early and late complications after gastric surgery.

Given the importance of the Golden kingklip (Genypterus blacodes) as an alternative to the production of salmonid species for worldwide diversification of aquaculture this study researched the morpho-histology of the digestive canal, providing a uniform nomenclature and basic information to support their nutritional management in captive conditions. The objective was to describe the normal morphology of the digestive canal. Twelve wild specimens were collected and dissected. Samples of the esophagus, stomach, liver, pyloric blind and intestines were obtained. An anatomical and histological description was performed. The digestive canal presented a short tubular esophagus, a slightly dilated, J-shaped stomach and thick walls. The stomach had a cardiac region that ended in a pyloric sphincter from which the intestine of thin walls. The intestine presented an anterior, middle and posterior segment. The anterior region of the first segment of the middle intestine presented 4-5 pairs of pyloric cecum. The middle intestine represented approximately 30 % of the total length of the digestive canal, with a smaller diameter compared to the first segment. The posterior intestine was separated from the middle intestine by a thick and powerful sphincter. The liver was large and elongated, and located in the peritoneal cavity located to the left plane and ventral to the swim bladder. The gallbladder was located lateral to the hepatic anterior wolf. The bile duct led to the duodenal region of the anterior intestine. Ventrally, the rectum ended in the anus, located in front of the anal fin. In general, the histological structures were variable according to the segment studied, a mucous tunic was recognized that presented a simple columnar epithelium, a lamina propria composed of loose connective tissue, a muscular layer of the mucosa composed of smooth muscle tissue and a submucosal layer composed of loose connective tissue, a circular and longitudinal stratum of muscular tunic, which had striated musculature and an adventitial tunic composed of a simple squamous epithelium. In conclusion, Golden kingklip (Genypterus blacodes) presents a digestive system typical of a carnivorous benthic fish adapted to feed on fish and crustaceans.


Dada la importancia del Congrio colorado (Genypterus blacodes) como alternativa a la producción de especies salmonídeas para la diversificación mundial de la acuicultura, el objetivo del presente estudio es describir la morfología normal del canal digestivo de esta especie, proporcionando una nomenclatura uniforme e información básica para apoyar su manejo nutricional en condiciones de cautiverio. Doce especímenes silvestres fueron colectados y disecados. Se obtuvo muestras del esófago, estómago, hígado, ciego pilórico e intestinos. Se realizó una descripción anatómica e histológica. El canal digestivo presentó un esófago tubular corto, un estómago ligeramente dilatado, con forma de J y paredes gruesas. El estómago presentaba una región cardíaca que terminaba en un esfínter pilórico desde el cual el intestino de paredes delgadas. El intestino presentaba un segmento anterior, medio y posterior. La región anterior del primer segmento del intestino medio presentó 4-5 pares de ciegos pilóricos. El intestino medio representó aproximadamente el 30 % de la longitud total del canal digestivo, con un diámetro menor en comparación con el primer segmento. El intestino posterior estaba separado del intestino medio por un esfínter grueso y poderoso. El hígado era grande y alargado, y ubicado en la cavidad peritoneal ubicado al plano izquierdo y ventral a la vejiga natatoria. La vesícula biliar se ubicó lateral al lobo anterior hepático. El ducto biliar desembocó en la región duodenal del intestino anterior. Ventralmente, el recto terminó en el ano, ubicado frente a la aleta anal. En general, las estructuras histológicas fueron variables según el segmento estudiado, se reconoció una túnica mucosa que presentaba un epitelio columnar simple, una lámina propia de la mucosa compuesta por tejido conectivo laxo, una capa muscular de la mucosa compuesta por músculo liso tejido y una capa submucosa compuesta de tejido conectivo laxo, un estrato circular y longitudinal de túnica muscular, que tenía musculatura estriada y una túnica adventicia compuesta por un epitelio plano simple. En conclusión, Congrio colorado (Genypterus blacodes) presenta un sistema digestivo típico de un pez bentónico carnívoro adaptado para alimentarse de peces y crustáceos.

The development of gastroretentive systems have been growing lately due to the high demand for carriers that increase drug bioavailability and therapeutic effectiveness after oral administration. Most of systems reported up to now are based on chitosan (CS) due to its peculiar properties, such as cationic nature, biodegradability, biocompatibility and important mucoadhesiveness, which make CS a promising biopolymer to design effective gastroretentive systems. In light of this, we reported in this review the CS versatility to fabricate different types of nano- and microstructured gastroretentive systems. For a better understanding of the gastric retention mechanisms, we highlighted expandable, density-based, magnetic, mucoadhesive and superporous systems. The biological and chemical properties of CS, anatomophysiological aspects related to gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and some applications of these systems are also described here. Overall, this review may assist researchers to explore new strategies to design safe and efficient gastroretentive systems in order to popularize them in the treatment of diseases and clinical practices.

We describe the morphological adaptations of the tongue and gastrointestinal tract of the striped sand snake Psammophis sibilans and discuss their functional importance. Using standard histological, histochemical, and scanning electron microscopy techniques, we analyzed 11 adult snakes of both sexes. Our findings showed that the bifurcated non-papillate tongue exhibited chemoreceptive adaptions to squamate foraging behavior. The lingual apex tapered terminally with sensory spines, and the body of the tongue possesses a characteristic central odor-receptor chamber that might serve to trap and retain scent molecules. Furthermore, the intrinsic musculature showed interwoven and well-developed transverse, vertical and longitudinal muscle fibers that control contraction and retraction during probing and flicking. The esophagus displayed highly folded mucosa lined with columnar epithelium with goblet cells. In contrast, the stomach mucosa formed finger-like gastric rugae, encompassing tubular glands with dorsal gastric pits. The intestine is distinct from other vertebrates in lacking the crypts of Lieberkühn in the tunica mucosa and submucosa. The intestine mucosa is mostly arranged in interdigitating villi oriented perpendicular to the luminal surface. We extrapolated subtle variations for both acid and neutral mucopolysaccharides and glycoproteins localization as well as collagen fibers using histochemical analyses. The elaborate histo-morphological and functional adaptation of the tongue and digestive tract plays a pivotal role in foraging and feeding behavior.
